Personally, I would give using any chemicals on a lawn a miss. Apart from anything else herbicides are not good for earthworms which form part of hedgehogs’ natural diet. In addition if any pesticides are included they will kill other potential food items for hedgehogs.
I always wonder if feeding and weeding even serves much purpose. If i.e. clover is in a lawn it fixes nitrogen and helps ‘feed’ the grass, has nectar rich flowers, if they are allowed to grow and are fairly drought tolerant so will still stay green longer if there is a drought. Other ‘weeds’ also have deeper roots and so will survive better in drought situations. More natural lawns seem to me to be more environmentally friendly, in general. Although, I realise it is all a matter of choice.
