i bought a very very neglected house 16 months ago, the fences were all but gone and the back garden was upto the first floor windows. the vines and brambles were even coming inside the house where windows had been removed and shutters put up.
needless to say, there was an extreme amount of good and bad wildlife in it all πŸ™‚

after completly refurbishing the inside i started on the outside and just flattened everything then dug and filtered the soil down 2 foot deep.
i found so many rat runs and even fox holes.

i did put up new fences which definitely are not wildlife freindly, i basically buried 1 gravel board and then a 2nd on top with a 5ft fence on top of that.

reason being is because the houses backing onto my left side and the houses behind, none look after their gardens and there is too many rats.

I did however guess their would be hedgehogs in all of the jungle so I thought I would build a hedgehog house or 2 with the intention of burying them under shrubs this year when the garden would be finished.

I built one of them and put it on a 2ft pile of slabs in preparation at the bottom of my garden.

When i replaced the side gate, i left a gap under it big enough for hogs to get thru.

A couple of months ago, I spotted a big hedgehog in my back garden and watched it, it was climbing up the side of the stack of slabs then went into the hedgehog house, turns out somehow or other he had moved into it on top of the pile of slabs, i have since made it a lot easier for him to get home by building him a ramp out of broken slabs πŸ™‚

Then about 3 weeks ago, I spotted a new much smaller darker hog in the back garden, this one now visits every night. And last night we had a 3rd visit our back garden, another big one like our resident pancake πŸ™‚

Anyway, What Im trying to say is, keep putting the food out, and if you have any access at all the hedgehogs will find a way to get to you πŸ™‚
