Hey, Is there anything we can do to help hot hogs in there houses during the heat? I’m concerned it’s going to be very hot inside there.

I have left out water throughout the day if needed. But wondering if there is anything else I should be doing instead?

When I built Hedgehog Close I made sure the houses were in a shady part of the garden, no direct sunlight, and that is about all you can do to be honest. Ensure the house is shaded. One of mine tends to get up early at the moment, go for a long drink and then curl up under a bush for an hour’s zzzz’z before doing proper hunting and that may be temperature related but I’ll never know.

As long as water is available and the house isn’t in the sun then we just have to hope they’re ok. We can’t install fans, aircon, ice baths or cover them with wet towels!

Agree with Williamc – shaded cover is best – trees ideally as they absorb lots of heat themselves and provide a cool natural environment. works for us humans too! Hogs will tend to move out of their houses and sleep outside when it gets really hot as well. Last year, if you recall the weeks and weeks of heat and dryness, it was understood that many hogs went into a summer hibernation due to lack of food and water – Aestivation – its called. I only hope we didn’t lose too many of them as a result of that episode!
