I only see my hedgehog during the day

  I only see my hedgehog during daylight hours. He/she appears in my garden about 8am every morning to eat the dog food I put out for it. It wanders all over the garden in the bright sunshine. Is this normal? When I went on google to find out about them I read they shouldn’t be out in daylight. It doesn’t appear to be sick although it may be blind as it bumps into everything. It eats very well and is quite large. It races around the garden quite happily, even allowing my dog to sniff it. Do you think it is ok or should I be concerned?

  Hi-
  I would ring BHPS ASAP on 01584 890801- They may give you advice or put you in touch with your local carer.
  Do you know where the hedgehog is nesting?
  How long are they in the garden?
  There is a possibility it’s a mummy with hoglets so expert advice will be needed

  Unfortunately I don’t know where it is nesting. I only ever see the one, large hedgehog which is very friendly. But I see it several times during the day. He/she wanders around gardens and around our quiet close. Crossing the road and up and down everyone’s driveways. It always comes at the same time every morning in my garden for some dog food and water. I have become very fond of it and I am concerned for its welfare. I would post pictures or videos on here if I knew how to but I can’t see a link.

  Hi Jackie,
  It seems a contented hog BUT you are right it shouldn’t be out in the day. They hide injuries and illness very well.
  Ring BHPS and get advice. If they advise you to get him checked over it will be in the hogs best interest to do so.
  If you need to catch him get a high sided box (they can climb) and line with a towel and old newspaper or hay/straw if you have it. Wear gloves and keep covered when handling the hog they can have ticks. Maybe you could get him this morning…
  Once he has been looked over and hopefully given the all clear bring him back to where you found him.
  If he has to stay anywhere for treatment make it clear to them that you want him back for release to where you found him.

  Yes, I agree with simbo65. Ring the BHPS on 01584 890801. They will be able to give you advice and give you the contact number of your nearest carer. You can explain everything more fully to them and take advice.
