Hi, we have a resident hedgehog who moved into our garden last year. What’s the best way for us to clean the hedgehog house.? It’s easier to do it in the day time but I’m conscious he/she will be in there sleeping.? And should I wait a month or so to ensure there are no little ones around?

    Hi Dizzysmith

The best times to clean out hog houses are in April and October, but if a hog is in residence of course you can’t. If the hog vacates completely you may get another chance but shouldn’t disturb a hog if it’s in residence. By in residence, I mean sleeping in there at any time of the day, even if it goes out at night.

    There’s more information here: https://www.hedgehogstreet.org/cleaning-out-boxes/

    Good luck

Thanks Nic, I did think it wouldn’t be possible to clean it if the hog is in residence but I’m just conscious it may be a bit grotty in there! I guess they would move out if they don’t like it anymore! I have left some fresh leaves and hay nearby so hopefully he or she will do their own housekeeping 😀
