Recently I put a large box upside down under some shrubs in my garden and I started putting a dish of cat biscuits inside, the Hedgehog is quite messy, there’s always crumbs on the ground from where he has tipped the dish over and spilt biscuits all over the ground and recently the floor has been mouldy when I check it in the morning (I clean it up obviously) it’s quite awkward to clean up everyday, I could put news paper underneath but we don’t have any and it would go all sludgy, could I put straw down as a bedding? Does anyone have any suggestions to what I could do to prevent this?

I would try to get some paving slabs and put the food on them, then you you will be able to brush it up or wash it if necessary. You could even use a sheet of wood, if you had one. Alternatively you might have to move around the area you feed in, or use a box with a base to it.

18th June 2020 at 4:06 pm #24850Hi Emily they can be very messy mine always leaves poops in my feeding station. but what I have done is use a clear storage box with a lid on and when it is dirty I pour boiling water in it to clean it out and just tip everything out . It is much easier to do this then leave messy areas around garden. Sue
19th June 2020 at 12:05 am #24893Thank you for your response, I was desperate to make a feeding station for the hogs when I first discovered them in my garden and at the time the only thing that I could find that would be suitable was a clear storage box but with no lid so I just put that upside down and cut a hole in one of the sides. I don’t have any paving slabs or sheets of wood at the moment so I decided that the best thing to do was to move the box on to concrete, hopefully the hedgehog should find it’s way to the food soon enough!
Do you agree with my decision?( I hope the Hedgehog doesn’t get disappointed or sad when he goes for his visit to the box to see that it isn’t there!)
I have actually just seen the Hedgehog walk up my driveway into my garden at 23:47! I decided against putting my wildlife camera out tonight as it’s poring rain and not sure if it’s completely waterproof since there was an incident with a car and the camera a few weeks ago so I won’t see if the hedgehog finds the box tonight.
