Hi, I’m new to the Hedgehog only recently researching and trying to help. We have had hedgehogs in our garden for a number of years and last year set up a hedgehog house. When out yesterday to change the hay I discovered a sleeping hoggy. Very excited I quietly left and set up a wildlife camera and some food. Hedgy however didn’t come out all night or eat the food. Is this normal? Surly its too early to hybinate? What do people in the know advise? Thanks 🦔

No it isn’t too early for some hogs to be hibernating. Although by no means all are. But some of the mature males hibernate earlier than the females and hoglets. But I’m curious about why you were changing the hay.
Also cameras are not totally reliable – there is a space in time between images, so it’s possible for hog to exit or enter a box without it being captured by the camera. Probably the best way to tell whether a hedgehog has entered or exited a box is to put a small twig, rolled up paper or similar in such a position that it would not stop the hog negotiatng the doorway, but would be moved.
