Hedgehog Bonanza!

Five hedgehogs have all turned up in our garden tonight. Four adults and one hoglet. There was a lot of chuffing noises going on and some were hiding in long grass while another one was going head to head with another and trying to push it along and out of our garden. Maybe it was trying to protect the hoglet (which ended up going off on it’s own anyway) or maybe it was just being protective of a mate? Or was it three males battling over a female….who knows. A very entertaining hour and a half anyway….and it’s still going on!

That’s great news that there are so many hogs there. The two hogs going head to head will most likely have been two males – males are usually intolerant of each other if they meet – especially if there are females around. Hogs don’t pair up, as such, or at least not for any length of time. Hogs are fairly promiscuous and apparently one female will mate with more than one male on a night and litters of hoglets have been known to have more than one father.
Males don’t have anything to do with the rearing of hoglets, so it’s unlikely it was anything to do with protecting the hoglet. They would be unlikely to know whether it was theirs. Females, whilst they might nudge another hog, don’t normally push them along as males do.
But yes, it is very entertaining watching their antics.
