My hedgehog hasn’t come home!

Hello!
About 3 weeks ago I found a very large hedgehog asleep in my tortoises outdoor bed. It’s covered, weatherproof and has lots of shredded paper for warmth. The hedgehog has returned every night since and sleeps there during the day much to the annoyance of my tortoise who does not like her new lodger and would rather sit in the cold rain than doze with the hedgehog. I figure that the tortoise will hibernate in the garage soon anyway so only a couple of weeks left to share.
Anyway, my gorgeous hog didn’t return last night which I’m concerned about as it is so close to hibernation time. I have been feeding it cat biscuits since it started living with me but forgot last night as my daughter was poorly. Has it got grumpy with me and left home?Hi LianneL
What an enterprising hog taking over the tortoise bed! The hog may have been temporarily grumpy at not finding any food, but it could just as likely have disappeared to hibernate. They normally don’t hibernate in the same place as they have been spending daytimes, but build a special hibernating nest – hibernaculum.
They do tend to arouse from hibernation from time to time for short periods, so it’s worth leaving a small amount of food out – but some hogs also decide not to hibernate at all and stay out and about all winter, in which case just keep feeding as well as providing a constant source of water.
The hog may already have returned, but if not hopefully it will be back after hibernation, if not before.
