I put a hedgehog house under the hedge in our front garden 3 years ago, I put it far under the (very spiky) hedge so it was secluded as our front garden is quite small. It was difficult to check it and after checking it a few times during the first year I pretty much gave up on it as I couldn’t see any evidence of activity.

I decided to check it a couple of nights ago and unfortunately there was a dead hedgy in it, all snug in a big nest. It looks like it’s been there a year or two so I assume it maybe just didn’t make it through the winter.

I built the house out of untreated spruce floorboards, then covered it in pond liner to waterproof it and installed a ventilation pipe at the back. I’ve cleaned it out now and reinstalled it under the hedge in a slightly different position so it’s easier to reach in the hope it may attract a new resident.
