I wouldn’t worry about the slugs. They don’t really eat that much and the hogs don’t seem to mind them. But they do only tend to come out on wet nights, so a large plant tray with sand in might work, but probably only if it’s under cover, i.e. kept dry. Sharp grit might similarly help and they aren’t supposed to like sheep’s wool but again, if wet may tolerate it. Or if you put the tray on fairly rough surfaced paving. Alternatively you could create a moat – that should stop them!
