The hedghog may be living in another garden. They can travel up to 2 miles a night, so there are lots of potential opportunities. But in warmer weather they sometimes just have temporary sleeping places in sheltered or shrubby areas.

Yes, that’s a great idea to import some leaves from somewhere else. Shrub leaves are fine, too. I had one here who used a lot of weigela leaves. But maybe you also know some other people who have lots of leaves in their gardens. The hogs use loads of them in a well build hibernaculum.
