I also notice these markings on the IR night vision footage. Originally I thought it was from paint but these markings can change or even fade completely. I can id one particular hedgehog without using her white markings even though I called her Whiteside due to the markings. However, I have watched these fade over the last month. Is it possibly where they nest overnight. This might be the same nest and when they change nests and rest differently the markings fade or change. May be it is because they have had a scuffle with another hog ? I really don’t know the definitive but like you I am curious.
