Hello all. First time I have posted on here, but I am after a bit of advice. (Although I have just posted this in the hedgehog sightings forum as well). We have at least three hedgehogs that visit our garden, plus a fox. They come into contact occasionally, but do not bother one another. However, in the last couple of weeks, we have also acquired at least two badgers as regular night visitors and our hedgehogs have become less frequent. The fox seems to have stopped coming altogether. A bit concerned about the welfare of the hogs and have tried to deter the badgers by locking gates and not putting peanuts out for the fox, but they are still finding their way in. Any suggestions, or other experiences welcome.

    Hi BevHJ

I have just written a reply with two links of previous badger related topics, but the Forum is misbehaving at the moment and doesn’t seem to like more than one link, so I’ll send the links separately and try to remember what else I said! The original might appear – eventually – in which case apologies for any repetition.

Sorry to hear you have badgers. Sadly it is almost impossible to keep them out. If all else fails, they are quite capable of digging underneath boundaries, so can pretty much get in anywhere, despite people thinking they can’t.

You really need to stop feeding the hogs, otherwise it just creates a feeding station for badgers. They can make short work of a hedgehog.

Just to add to what I said previously, hedgehogs are at greater risk from badgers in the vicinity than they are from not having supplementary food. So it really is better not to feed them at all.

Sorry not to have better news.
