I leave dry food in our feeding station even after hedgehog activity seems to have finished for hibernation just in case, and it was taken a couple of times between early November and mid-December during milder spells. To my slight surprise our resident female hog (Tina; they all get names) has been active for the last 3 nights despite it being colder. The first night she seemed a bit wobbly on her feet, but since then and especially last night she looked strong and very active.
When she first appeared in September she was much smaller than the others we saw regularly and got bullied a bit by the then most regular female (Meg), so I thought she might have been born in the early summer, though we didn’t see any hoglets. Meg disappeared in early October and Tina has had the place to herself since so I was hoping she’d fatten up enough to survive the winter. It’s meant to get colder still oevr the next few days, so will be interesting to see if she remains active, or settles down again now she’s had a chance to feed up a bit.
