Hoglets births, how late in the year,is too late to be born?
-
I have a resident adult female, who has had contact with a large adult male about 2-3 weeks ago, she has been adding to the nesting material with leaves and dried cut grass, she also looks quite a bit bigger?. If?, she has a litter late August/ early September, what are their survival chances???.Cheers in advance for any replies,Shada,in central Scotland.👍
Anytime can be too late. This probable second lot of nestlings will hopefully get to 550/600gms before being able to get through the winter but any less than that, particularly in your area (more 600gms then!) would be better off being “rescued” and cared for during the colder months. They will not be able to build up enough brown fat stores to see them through, particularly because of the effects of climate change on the temperature swings. They think it’s ok to get up and have a sniff round for food (AND WATER!) more often than when we had a good, solid cold winter.
