I bought an old house last year in very bad condition.
The garden was in a very bad way and I had to flatten the lot it is just flat mud now except where an old shed is.
While clearing the garden all the paving slabs I removed I stacked up next to the shed about 2ft high and leant a few against the sides of them.
I have seen quite a bit of wildlife here already. I get a family of 6 foxes each night in my front garden. A tawny owl visits occasionally. 3 grey squirrels, 1 of which has got brave and will come in my patio doors and feed out of my hand. I also have a spotted woodpecker that I occasionally see first thing in the morning.
Anyway onto my surprise. With all the wildlife I expected there to be hedgehogs in the area so I built a house late last year.
I put it on top of the pile of slabs with the intention of this year when I actually get some plants in the garden I would bury it in some shrubs or something.Late 2 nights ago around 11pm i was sat by the patio doors and I spotted a hedgehog going up some steps and crossing the flat mud heading towards the shed.
I quietly went out to watch where he was going and to my surprise he was climbing up the slabs they was so steep I never thought he would get up but he did. And he went into the house I had made.
Turns out itβs already living in it on top of the slabs.
I have now adjusted the slabs leaning to make it a bit easier for him to get home π
Hedgehog house on slabs31st March 2025 at 6:41 pm #48288That’s a lovely story , love hogs so good luck with attracting more, do you leave food and water out for them . Sue
31st March 2025 at 7:10 pm #48289yes i sprinkle proper headgehog pellets each night since i have seen him and leave some meat based catfood every couple of nights now.
there is a garden pond he can drink from and I made sure theres escape routes should he fall in, but I also leave a small tub of water close to his route where he comes in and out of the garden each night π31st March 2025 at 7:10 pm #482901st April 2025 at 2:23 pm #48291Hi mcollins
What a clever hedgehog! They are good climbers – but how clever of it to know there was a hog house up there!
Hope you continue to enjoy the antics of the hedgehogs and all the other wildlife. Keep us posted – especially if any hoglets appear.
Happy hog watching!
4th May 2025 at 7:52 pm #48508I have been giving my hedgehog 1/2 a pouch of catfood most nights and it eats the lot each night.
Last night a 2nd hedgehog came in my garden and I realised just how big my one is it has got to be 1/2 the size again as the size of the other one that came in last night.
Am I giving it too much food ???it was kind of funny tho the hedgehogs were making their funny snorting hog sounds, then my hedgehog was a bully, and started pushing the new one around. I guess he was being a bit territorial π
