    Hello.
I have been watching the hedgehog in my garden since July and have a feeding station, which is used every night. I have 2 trailcams but despite moving them around to different parts of the garden, for some inexplicable reason, I somehow still have no idea where the hog comes from, or goes to.
It usually seems to cross the lawn – the camera shows it heading in that direction after he comes out of the feeding station – but where it goes from there, or comes from, I just don’t know! When I point the camera in that it never picks anything up for some reason.
Anyway, my question is this: I want to add a hibernation box but I don’t know where to put it.
Will the hog find it wherever it is?
My font garden where the feeding station is, is around 4 by 2 car lengths with a mature hedge along 2 sides – 1 beech and one mixed. The hog rarely seems to go towards the hedge though.

    Hi Lellynelly,

A quiet secluded sheltered spot is likely to be popular. I put a hedgehog house under a large holly bush and another under a Mexican mock orange shrub – the year-round foliage provides some protection from rain and the cold wind. Both houses were used during the 2023/24 winter but not used at all last winter! I do clear away dropped dry holly leaves because of their sharp thorny edges – can’t be great for small paws!

Haha – the “disappearing hedgehog” problem! I know exactly what you mean: visible one second, not visible the next – leaving one baffled as to where they’ve gone. If I work out a solution I’ll let you know!

    Kind regards,

    Sam
