Go WILD for Hedgehogs: Winter

9th December 2025

Over the summer, we asked you to choose a patch of your garden to become wild, leaving it to grow long and undisturbed.

Find out more about about Go WILD for Hedgehogs and log your wild patch!

Winter advice

As nature winds down for winter, your wild patch may be looking a bit thin on the ground. At this time of year, it’s best to leave any wilder areas undisturbed in case of hibernating hedgehogs. But if you can brace yourself for the cold, it’s a good time of year to add extra features to the garden, like a hedgehog highway or a log pile.

Here are some of your submissions to Go WILD for Hedgehogs; some new wild patches and some more established ones to give you some inspiration!

Donna’s wild patch in Kent has plenty of ivy cover, plus a handy hedgehog house.

Abigail’s Wiltshire garden has a designated area for longer foliage and branches, providing the perfect spot for a hidden hedgehog house.

Susan’s Cleveland garden is a great example of a brilliantly wild patch alongside shorter areas of grass. Look at all that natural shelter for hedgehogs!

The longer grasses in Pat’s Somerset garden will provide, shelter, nesting materials and insect prey for any prickly visitors.
