Happy New Year!

7th January 2013

The People’s Trust for Endangered Species and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society would like to wish all Hedgehog Champions a very happy new year.

2012 has been both a good and bad year for hedgehogs.

Good: We have recruited another 5870 Hedgehog Champions through Hedgehog Street who are spreading the word about hedgehog conservation in British gardens and green spaces.

Bad: A decade of PTES’ Mammals on Roads survey has confirmed that hedgehogs continue to decline across the country at a rate of about 4% a year. This is very worrying and reinforces the importance of garden habitats as a refuge for the hedgehog population.

There are big plans for Hedgehog Street in 2013. The look and content of the site will be revamped and we will be involving the Hedgehog Champion army in more specific activities and projects to improve hedgehog habitat and strengthen hedgehog populations across the land. Action stations!
