Hedgehog road signs

14th October 2020

New guidance released on placement of small animal traffic signs.

A new small mammal road sign featuring a hedgehog was released in 2019. The sign serves to remind drivers of small mammals on roads, and protect dwindling populations of hedgehogs.

Following the publication of research into hedgehog road mortality earlier this year, we have produced some guidance on placement of these road signs for local authorities. A recent research review by Nottingham Trent PhD student Lauren Moore also outlines the problems caused by roadkill and the potential solutions.

What next?

Please use this information when sending sign requests to local councils, and let us know if you’re successful in having a sign installed in your area!

Keep adding roadkill sightings to the BIG Hedgehog Map. This helps us understand the distribution of hedgehogs and the impacts of roads.
