Looking for some advice please as I’m getting a little worried about the safety of our visiting hogs
We moved into our house last year, the house next door is empty and garden overgrown. We have a few hogs that visit our small garden each night and I leave dry food and water for them. I’m certain one or more are nesting in the garden next door as I heard some snuffling during the day recently
I’ve been told the house will be sold soon and the garden will be cut back. I’ll put signs up on the fence advising of the hogs and to check before cutting back. If I see anyone there I’ll speak to them at the time as well
I’m worried for our little hogs and their likely nest disturbance. What can I do to help them?I have a hog house used as a feeding station
I’ll get another and fill with straw for our garden but it’s only a small garden and we have a toddler so not sure how much peace they’ll get if they relocate here
We back onto a green so if disturbed hopefully then can flee there
I caught some mating a couple of weeks ago – how long before hoglets are likely to arrive?29th April 2026 at 3:13 pm #50969It sounds as if you are already doing everything that you can for next door, well done
Don’t fill your house with straw as hogs prefer to make their own nests but instead leave the bedding near ish to the house
Gestation in hogs is roughly 32 days so if they were mating a couple of weeks ago it won’t be more than a couple more. Once the babies are born mum is likely to stay in the nest for the first couple of days with them before venturing out.20th May 2026 at 5:35 pm #51167Thanks for your response, really hoping we have some hoglets visit this summer. Luckily we were given the solicitors details who are dealing with the house next door. I spoke to them about the Hogs and they will keep me updated if/when the garden is due to be cleared so I can check and relocate before any cutting back is done
16th October 2026 at 3:54 pm #52313Dear Members of Hedgehog Street,
I have my doubts about the hedgehog boxes available online on Amazon, eBay, Etsy, garden centres and other sites, whether they are any good for breeding hedgehogs.
I just wondered if any members might have bought one and been successful with their purchase, and had a mum and babies successfully reared in these bought boxes.
Has anyone had success? If so, where was the box from?
And has anyone bought boxes and never had mum and babies?
Thank you for any replies – just about breeding, not hibernation.
