Happy 15th Birthday to Hedgehog Street!
3rd November 2026
This year we are celebrating our 15th birthday!

Hedgehog Street was set up in 2011 when BHPS and PTES decided to join together for a campaign, in response to the recognised decline in hedgehog numbers.
Since then, we have registered over 136,000 Hedgehog Champions, sent out hundreds of newsletters and spoken to thousands of people, We have logged over 25,000 holes and 220,000 hedgehogs on our BIG Hedgehog Map.

In 2022 we released the State of Britain’s Hedgehog’s report, which told us that Hedgehogs in Britain have undergone a long historic decline, but differences between urban and rural populations are increasingly apparent. In urban areas, the picture is of a stable population showing signs of recovery. In stark contrast, rural populations remain low. The next report is due out in 2027.
In 2024 we released Britain’s National Hedgehog Conservation Strategy to tackle the ongoing decline revealed in the State of Britain’s Hedgehog’s Report. We are working together with many different stakeholders to overcome the key threats identified in the report.
We have also reported on lots of new research findings, run some rewarding campaigns, and of course celebrated lots of our wonderful Champions who are helping hedgehogs in a myriad of different ways.
Happy Birthday Hedgehog Street!
