That is sad, but don’t give up hope, as you say, he may be back. They do tend to move nests, from time to time, so it may be that he thought it was time for a change, but might still come back for food. But also the males do tend to go off to hibernate much earlier than the females and sometimes disappear in September. Fingers crossed he’s ok.
