I love watching my hedgehogs on my security cameras every morning, i have 3 residents with houses that I made and a couple of feeding stations, I also have upto 3 visitors each night.

2 weeks ago I was watching my security cameras like i do every morning, and noticed 1 of my resident hedgehogs (bobbin) came home dragging both his back legs and was really struggling. as soon as I saw him I tried contacting our biggest rescue in our area and couldnt get through, by the end of the day I give up with them and found a smaller rescue. They advised me to take him straight to their vet which I did.

As I was driving there I was fearing I wouldnt be coming home with him. I really thought both back legs was broken. and from the video i had sent the rescue they thought they was too.

When I got to the vets they sedated bobbin and took xrays, of his legs and spine and couldnt find any breaks or fractures so they said we will try him on meds for 5 days see how he goes. They said we cant rule out a spinal injury even tho we cannot see any breaks.

while trying to contact the rescues I built a temporary wall out of some large sheets of wood 16 inches high 15 foot around his house in the corner of the garden so he couldnt wander off.

The vet said it was ok to put him back in his house just keep him in that contained area for the 5 days and then they would check him again.
I set up another camera at ground level, each evening I would put out just a small amount of food with his meds, wait up and watch the cameras to make sure he ate all the meds then go and give him his main bowl of food.
Then each morning watch the cameras again to see how he was doing.
After the 5 days was up, I contacted the vet and sent them the videos of his daily progress but he was still struggling with his right back foot but was starting to use his left back foot even starting to scratch with it. The vet told me to keep up his meds for until Friday just gone another 4 days and we will review him again then. on Thursday night he was using both legs and scratching with both, still not quite as well with the back right as the back left. On Friday I sent the vet the videos again, They was very impressed with the progress and said to stop the meds now. And it was upto me when I release him from containment, I could keep an eye on him for a few more days and if he doesn’t deteriorate then let him go.

Bobbin wasnt happy with that idea, Friday night he had had enough of containment and actually escaped, how he got over the wall i had made a full 16 inch high i will never know because it was very smooth solid wood.

Saturday morning I watched him on cameras wander round my garden down my side alley across my front garden out across the road and into the grounds of a small primary school opposite. I was quite happy to see him wander off like that even tho it was earlier than expected.

I then went out and took the containment fence down in the day on Saturday, its now Sunday morning and I have just sat and watched my cameras as normal I had 5 hogs in the garden last night with the usual bullying and dating antics going on, then at 4.40am in comes Bobbin, he went and had a feed and then back to his house.

I guess he knows where his well off after all lol.
