Crept up on my hogilo today – it’s under the hedge behind the shrubs so quite an adventure getting in and out – to gently lift the lid and find that it is full – and I mean full – of bedding! Does this mean maybe that I have a hibernating hog? So exciting!

    Hi DwarfHog

Glad to hear they are making use of your hogilo. It still seems quite early for hibernation, but some of the males do hibernate surprisingly early. It could also be a nest in preparation for hibernation, but they do make nests for other reasons as well. The hoglet who didn’t hibernate here last year, made quite an elaborate nest and I thought he might hibernate in it. It was really intricate and filled the whole of a box. As it turned out, he must have had another nest elsewhere because he spent some days here and some not. But he also used it to have naps in between feeding. It was pretty cold outside!

I think it is exciting if they choose to use one of our boxes/homes, whatever purpose it’s for!
