    Hi all,
i have had a hedgehog visiting my garden for a few months, we have placed an upside down planter under a tree and he has been making it a home filling it with leaves. I have placed tried food and water and filmed him for several weeks showing he stops some nights and other times he returns in the early hours and leaves (the weather is mild still so no signs of hibernation). My concern is the video’s have showed i now have a rat that visit’s and has stated going in the house for the food, is this a problem, will it stop the hedgehog coming back and forth and potentially hibernating in the house?

Hi, my understanding is that it’s best to put the food somewhere else, not in the house where they sleep. Your hog has obviously decided he likes sleeping in your planter so it’s best to leave him undisturbed. I put the food out, some distance away from the sleeping house, in an upturned plastic box (with a hedgehog-sized hole) so the hogs can get in but not larger animals like cats or foxes. Unfortunately I have Ratty and Mousy in my garden too, and I don’t think there’s anything we can do to deter them.
