I looked outside very late last night. It was still ridiculously warm out there after yet another very hot day. One hedgehog was happily eating the kitten biscuits I’d spread on the lawn (water dishes are in the garden too). Another hog was lying flat, legs splayed, on the lawn, ignoring everything. It was breathing. I checked a few hours later. It had gone. Do you think it was just trying to cool down?

Yes, quite possibly. Hedgehogs sometimes lie flat with their legs stretched out to lose heat. A wildlife rescue describes that exact “legs sticking out” posture as something hedgehogs do when they’re hot.

But if it was completely unresponsive and ignored food, it could also have been suffering from heat stress or dehydration. You did the right thing by leaving out water and biscuits.
