Hi everyone I have 3 hedgehogs that visit my garden every night , and today one of them came out and was walking round the garden, so I went out and gave it some food in case it was hungry, it looked healthy , so am just wondering if anyone knows why it would come out in the day time ?

    Hi Soulsister

It isn’t normal for hogs to come out into the open during the daytime. Other than in a few circumstances (i.e. Prospective mothers sometimes come out during the day to finish building their nests – but you would probably see them carrying nesting material) it is a warning that something may be amiss.

The best thing you can do is ring the BHPS on 01584 890801 to find out the contact details of your local hog carer/rehabilitator. You can describe things to them in more detail and take their advice on the best way to proceed.

It’s very important that you leave water out for the hogs all day every day, just in case a dehydrated hog is desperate for a drink during the day. Sometimes it’s easier for them to find wild food than it is to find water.

Good luck hope the hog is o.k.

Thank you for replying. I always leave the water out all the time for them , and food at night time , it’s in the garden again now eating , I will look out tomorrow to see if it comes out in the day again if so I will give that number a ring .
