4 hogs in the garden tonight, stuffing themselves with mealworms. Lots of pushing each other about and hissing at each other. Honestly guys, there’s plenty of food for you all! 🙂

We have about 8 at the moment. As you say, lots of hissing. We have youngsters that sit in the foodbowls and see anything else off despite lots of pushing and shoving! 2 Trailcams have resulted in loads of images and videos.

    Hi Spiersy

Good to hear you have had 4 hedgehogs visiting your garden. They can be quite grumpy sometimes, but it isn’t always about the food. Sometimes it could be rivalry for the attentions of females.

If you are going to feed the hedgehogs, the best thing to offer them is either hedgehog food or cat/dog food, meat varieties, not fish, or kitten biscuits. They do love mealworms but they should really only be used as a small snack or small amounts with something else. For more information see under Champions Chat ‘What to Feed Hedgehogs’ started by Wildlifehaven.

Pauline, I always think there must be some hedgehog code of behaviour, that until hoglets reach a certain size, the adult hogs are very tolerant and let the youngsters get away with whatever they like. Sitting in foodbowls seems to be a favourite. Once they get a bit bigger ‘the gloves are off’!
