We noticed we had a hedgehog visit so we purchased a camera and set up a feeding station with hedgehog food and water. Since then we have picked up sightings everyday but looking at last nights footage we think it may now be more than one hedgehog

My profile picture are the photos from last night (I couldn’t work out how to put an image in my post)

Hi Dengen, there is always more than one, my way of counting is to observe the poo! More poo, more hogs, my experience is that each hog does a poo in or near the feeding station, so count them, and using your compooter
calculate the approximate number. By the way youngsters do little poos, big males do big poos 🙂 The problem is sometimes they make more than one visit so you have to do a bit of guestimation.

    Hi Dengen

I can’t be 100% certain with only those images because, for instance, the one on the right might have more light on it, etc. But on initial view they do look like different hogs, but you really need more views to be certain.

I wrote a few notes a while back to help with identifying the hogs which you might find helps in telling them apart: https://www.hedgehogstreet.org/forums/topic/identifying-hedgehogs-from-their-natural-markings/

The reason I think they may be different, is the darker marking round the eye on the left hand one seems to go downwards as well as towards the nose. Whereas the one on the right the marks seem to go more neatly down towards the nose. The left hand one also seems to have a pale sort of crescent shape (turned round a bit) on the forehead with a darker triangle coming from it. But, as mentioned, it could be just the effect of lighting with it being only one ‘still’ image of each. But might be things you could look out for when comparing hog images.

Good luck and happy hog watching!

p.s. Re. posting photos here, you can only do it by adding a link if they are already somewhere on the internet. But you can put them in the photo gallery accessed via the home page.
