    Morning all.
We have had a camera set up outside our hedgehog box in the garden for the last month or so and see the resident hedgehog getting up in the morning when its light and going to the toilet just to one side of the box.
Now I know that it wouldn’t be sensible to poo in your bed but we are surprised that he/she does it during the day.
Is this normal or could he/she have an upset tummy?
    Thank you
    Matt.

Does it go straight back into it’s box? If so it’s probably normal behaviour for this hog as it sounds quite deliberate behaviour.
It is also possible it’s pregnant/nursing, as they will toilet away from the babies, although it’s rather early in the year, but not impossible especially if it’s not hibernated
While hogs stay in their nests during the day they don’t spend the whole time asleep
If it’s staying up and wandering around then there may be a problem, but to be honest in a month I would have expected deterioration

    Hi Stef.
Thanks for reply. Hedgehog ( We really need to name it) does tend to go back straight away and we have also seen that during the night there is a lot of nest building going on, possible preparing a nursery? We also saw her in the garden early in the new year several times in the early evening. So she did seem to be out of hibernation early on. Be great if she was pregnant.
    Thanks again
