I am very sad to report that I believe a large bird of prey has picked off the hedgehogs in my garden.
We had six hedgehogs that over the last two years have lived in three ‘houses” but in the space of two weeks they have gone and their food remains and no untouched. Obviously, I don’t really know what has happened but this week i saw a big bird fly down early morning about 2am. We often see red kites soaring above us but i didn’t think they would cope in the housing estate when they have all the lovely countryside. Not seen any tawny owls. It has been sweater weather here so I don’t think it is too warm for them.
That’s all I saw on the security camera. I don’t have 24 hour coverage; I just have motion detection and then it cuts out.
What do forum members think? Could this have happened? I truly hope they have upsticks for pastures new.A big maybe to a bird to “babies” once out of the nest after 4 weeks or so. Red kites are scavengers really, so your likely culprit is a local dog, fox or are badgers near? Did you find carcasses? Cats usually only predate in the nest during the hoglets first 3 weeks. After that, they are relatively “spiky”.
Early morning 2 am. Only big bird I could think of might be a European Eagle owl that many “collectors” have allowed to escape!Roy, thank you! I haven’t found any carcasses, thank goodness. . Since I saw the big bird on the Ring, I have built a barricade of deckchairs and the rotary washing line so the bird can’t swoop or land. I have also moved all the water bowls to spots where the hedgehogs will be far less vulnerable.
No sign of the bird on the Ring since.
